Energy Use in the United States
Just how much energy does your home use? Of course, this varies dramatically depending on the size of your home, your location, and the severity of weather. However, the Department of Energy has collected and averaged data from across the country in order to provide a general idea of energy use.
Below are some facts about total energy consumed by the United States.
In 2007 we consumed 101.6 Quadrillion Btus of energy.
In 2007 each person used 337 million Btu.
In 2005 we spent 1.043 trillion dollars on energy.
In 2005 we spent 3,525 dollars per person.
In 2006 we used 875,000 Btu per dollar of Gross National Product (GNP).
Interesting facts about our energy use.
The energy use per person has been steady from 1970 with a reduction in 2006 over 2005.
The energy in Btu per dollar of GNP in 2006 was lower than any other year since the beginning of tabulation in 1949.

Certainly as the population and economy grows more energy will be used. However it appears we have begun to be more efficient and effective with the use of energy. Continued efforts and greater focus on saving energy should yield positive results.
How is Energy Used In Our Homes
Energy used by the Residential Sector in 2007 was 21,753 trillion Btu. Of this total, 6,688 trillion Btu came from primary energy sources like natural gas and petroleum. The remainder is 4,749 trillion Btu of retail electricity use. An additional 10,316 trillion Btu was lost to generate the retail electricity. Only 556 trillion Btu (2.56%) was directly from renewable energy sources. (Electrical power generation used 3.92% renewable energy in 2007.)
